The Importance of Storytelling and Why Your Brand Needs It
Storytelling. Without the story, you're just telling. Yes, there is a difference but it's slight.
Down today's rabbit hole I found my feed littered with different content creators telling you how to tell impactful stories on social media and then after the 3rd video the obvious crossover hit me -
Design is the ability to tell stories, our stories. Designers should be able to tell stories in their work. It can be through the design language or it can be the literal story of the project history. Therefore...
If you're not the storytelling designer type or you struggle to take the clients on the journey, I challenge you to look up a few videos or short talks from someone sharing how they tell a story outside of the architecture discipline.
As someone who has dabbled in a few different industries (honestly, I'm extremely lucky I had the opportunity to not be pigeonholed into one), I showed up to Architecture's front door one day and saw all the crossovers. From journalism, to writing, to psychology, to art... it's all there, all blending together that help support and challenge the human stories we tell.
For the newbies (or veterans), go look up how journalists ask questions - this could help you in conversations with clients. Go look up how scientists ask questions - this can help you when you're designing un-biased surveys. Go look up how writers ask questions - they might be more all over the place but they certainly know how to write the narrative.
My hope is that more people become curious about their fellow humans and our environment so we can get back to reading and writing great stories.
Thanks for reading, felt inspired. A quote to leave you with from Richard Powers, a decorated American novelist...
"The pleasure of the world depends on slowing down and looking harder."
So go look.
